The Stables Tearoom - the third generation

The Stables Tearoom
opened in 1983. It was opened by my mother Sarah Sage (now Evison). Charis
Ward my grandmother owns and runs Abbey Dore Court Gardens. The Tearoom
started quietly offering visitors light lunches, home made cakes, cream teas
and ice creams. This gradually increased to include a Gift Gallery, Teddy
Bear Loft and a Dairy Museum.
This quickly turned into a thriving business for the Sage family. In 1998
Sarah remarried and moved to Guernsey resulting in the Gift Gallery, Dairy
Museum and Bears Loft closing. Since then the Tearoom has been run by
different contractors.
In
2007 our contractor pulled out of running the Tearoom after only 1 week. My
grandmother and I had to take over the Tearoom for the summer season. It was
exhausting for both of us as I work full time and my grandmother had to do
the gardens as well. The Tearoom quickly closed at the end of the 2007
season. I realised to reopen I would need to plan it properly, make quite a
few changes and do it all in my own time. So changes have been made and
opening times altered but hopefully I can now offer visitors a relaxing time
in a beautiful location.
We
opened on the 4th April 2009. I have early
childhood memories of sitting in the yard watching my mother running back
and forth. As soon as we were old enough we helped in the Tearoom usually
washing up! So running the tearoom will all be second nature to me!
My
Grandmother has spent all of winter 2008 clearing and preparing the garden
with the help of my brother Julian. I have spent time refurbishing the
Tearoom
and updating the stable yard with many thanks to my family and friends for
all their help.
I
hope you will come and visit the Tearoom and the gardens very soon.
